‘I’m going to tell everyone what you’ve done. You were my doctor, and you kept on treating me long after we were seeing each other. Maybe you’ll lose your job. I could have a case against you for abusing your authority. And your kid will find out. I’ll tell him myself. He’ll never see you in the same way again.’ She laughs and clutches her stomach, wincing.
He won’t ask Leela what she’s done – he already knows, and this is confirmed when she vomits all over herself. It’s the final part of her revenge.
As soon as he’s turned away again, he hears the thud. Her body smacking against the wooden floor.
He walks over to her – she’s still breathing; her breaths are shallow. Passing her, he walks to the bathroom, checks the cabinet above the sink. There’s not much in there other than sanitary towels and some beauty products. He finds what he’s looking for in the bin, reaches into it and pulls out the aspirin packets. Counts them. Ten of them, each with thirty empty blister packs.
He needs to help her, call the ambulance, at least, but then he remembers her threat. There is no way he can lose everything. He’s worked too hard. And if Jackson ever knew… Greg can’t bear to think about that.
He doesn’t look at her as he walks to the front door, opens it and steps outside. He rushes to his car, keeping it together until he gets inside and slams the door shut.
That’s when he breaks down, burying his head in his hands.
As he drives away, heading back to a life that is forever changed, he vows to do everything necessary to protect his son, and his career. Yet he can’t escape the certainty that sooner or later he will get what he deserves.
