At the door Abby gives her another brief hug. ‘He’ll come home, Sienna. He’s probably just angry and needs time to cool off. Will you let me know as soon as you hear anything? I’ll call you later to see how you are.’
And then she hurries off, turning to wave before she drives away.
Sienna fills the rest of the day calling and emailing everyone she can think of who knows Greg, even those he hasn’t corresponded with for years. It’s hard to hold it together as she speaks or writes, her pain growing more intense as she repeats her explanation. She doesn’t know where Greg is. Have they heard from him by any chance? Can they give her a call if they do? Nobody knows anything, and the flicker of hope she feels with each contact with a new person quickly diminishes.
If he’s not back in the morning, then she’ll call the police. There’s no other option now. She wants to believe that Greg is punishing her, that he’s left her even, but in her gut – despite the state of their marriage – she knows he would never want her worrying about him. It’s not that, she knows it like she knows the sun will set this evening.
It’s one a.m. when she finally falls into bed, exhausted, her frazzled thoughts drifting back to Abby. A woman she’s put her trust in, opened herself up to. Yet now Abby has avoided Sienna, and lied to her, and it’s all been since the night of the dinner party.
What the hell has Sienna done?
Sienna tries to convince herself she is being irrational, that none of this is evidence of anything, yet she can’t shake the feeling that Abby is hiding something.
THIRTEEN
Abby
Knowing that she is responsible for the pain Sienna is in, Abby couldn’t have spent another second inside her house yesterday. She tried to convince her that Greg is just taking some time out. He isn’t missing: he’s taking a break, hitting pause on his life. People walk out on their spouses all the time, and it isn’t unheard of to do it without any explanation.
‘Are you okay?’ Rob is watching her, curious. She has to be careful; he knows her well enough to sense when something is wrong. ‘You were staring into space,’ he continues. ‘It worries me when you do that.’ Going blank, he calls it.
‘I wasn’t thinking about Mum,’ she assures him, although telling him that she was would be the easiest way to explain her distant behaviour. She won’t lie about her mum though; the memories Abby has of her have no place in the mess her life has quickly become. ‘I’m worried about Sienna.’ It’s as close to the truth as she can get.
