At home, she paces the living room, every emotion flooding through her body. Sadness, anger, fear. They all mingle into one, turning into something even more deadly and horrific. Something happened between Greg and Abby; she’s known something is wrong but hoped it wasn’t this. And now Abby revealing to whoever was on the phone what she’d done is further evidence. Sienna wanted proof of something when she’d gone back to Abby’s house – but the shock of what she’s heard has shattered her world.

Now it all makes sense: Greg’s behaviour after the dinner party, Abby distancing herself. It’s been right there in front of her all along. But she’d wanted to see the best in her husband, to believe that her marriage has been worth all the time she’s put in, all the time they’ve both put in.

So Greg has left her. For Abby? Are they planning to be together somehow, and Abby is biding her time, finding a way to tell Rob? There must be more to it. She’s still convinced Greg wouldn’t hide away from this, even if he has committed adultery. He’s not a coward; he would face Sienna, no matter what.

She stops in front of the hallway mirror and stares at her reflection. She barely recognises the woman staring back. The eyes looking back at her, glass balls of hatred, don’t belong to her.

She knows what she has to do.

PART TWO

EIGHTEEN

Abby

The pounding on the door forces her up. She’s still half asleep, her senses blunt, maybe she’s imagined it?

No, there it is again. And someone banging on your door at 3 a.m. is never a good thing.

Beside her, Rob remains asleep, in spite of the racket going on outside. He wasn’t joking all those times he’s claimed he’d be able to sleep through a hurricane.

Although Abby isn’t scared – surely nobody wishing to do them harm would draw attention to themselves in this way – her stomach twists into a tight knot.

Rushing to the window, she peers through the blinds, although from upstairs it’s impossible to see who is standing on the doorstep. Sienna’s car is parked haphazardly across the drive. It almost looks as if it would have taken more effort to get it at that angle than if she’d kept it straight. No need to wake Rob, then. Sienna has come for her.

With the hallway bathed in darkness, she almost loses her footing on the stairs in her effort to get to the door before the hammering begins again. Everything about this is wrong; Sienna isn’t the kind of person who asks for help with anything and isn’t the kind of person who ever needs help with anything. Abby knows without a doubt that this is something to do with her. There will be no more hiding.
