Abby is the person standing between her and the truth, and it’s clear from her earlier message that she won’t talk to Sienna. That leaves only one option: Sienna will make sure Abby has no choice but to tell the truth.
TWENTY
Abby
Rob is looking at her differently. Everything he says seems normal enough, there’s just something in his actions, in the way he throws too many silent glances her way. Since he got home from work, it feels as though he’s keeping a physical distance between them. She hopes it’s only guilt and paranoia forcing her to read too deeply into everything.
She hasn’t told him about Sienna’s text this morning, has somehow managed to avoid mentioning her at all. This has been easy enough now that she has some news to distract them both.
‘I’ve got a job interview,’ she declares, watching him pull off his suit jacket and loosen his tie.
‘That’s great. Where is it?’
‘Palmers Green. It’s so close.’
‘That’s fantastic.’ Rob smiles but doesn’t come over to kiss her as he usually would have; instead he roots around in his briefcase.
‘The only thing is it’s not a deputy head position, it’s for a Year Six teacher. But I can’t wait forever for something to come up. I need to get back into a school, at least, then I can keep looking for something else.’ Abby doesn’t add that the other reason she’s going for this post is because she’s desperate to be busy again, for something normal to fill up her days and overshadow what’s hanging over her.
She waits for Rob to ask why she’s changed her mind so suddenly, but thankfully his thoughts lie elsewhere.
‘Are you ready for dinner at Mum and Dad’s?’ he asks.
For once, the thought of spending the evening with Lillian and Eric doesn’t fill her with anxiety. It means that Sienna’s name won’t come up for a few hours. ‘Give me ten minutes,’ she says, and as she heads upstairs, she can feel Rob’s eyes on her.
‘Oh, how lovely; you didn’t need to bring anything,’ Lillian declares, taking the bottle of red wine Rob has bought for them. ‘We’re your parents, we don’t expect anything.’
Rob laughs. ‘Every time, Mum. Maybe one day you’ll just take it without saying that.’
Lillian chuckles and nudges his arm before turning to Abby. ‘How lovely to see you, Abby.’ She leans forward and places her arms around her, her touch so light Abby can barely feel it. ‘Well, come in, dinner’s almost ready.’
