‘Leela. The patient Greg was having an affair with. I know the address she lived at.’

‘How did you find it?’

‘It doesn’t matter. There’s somewhere to start now, isn’t there?’

‘But it was years ago. What are the chances of someone who knew her still living there?’

‘She was young, Abby. Twenty-one. There’s a good chance she still lived with her parents.’

‘That is young. What was Greg thinking?’

‘Remember he was younger then. And I’m not one hundred per cent sure it was this woman, but there’s a good chance. I’m going there, Abby. Tomorrow. I need to know what Greg did. What if it’s got something to do with his murder?’

‘How?’

‘I don’t know. Revenge maybe? I don’t know, but the police will be able to find out. I just need to give them a name, and I can’t do that until I’m sure it was her.’

Abby falls silent. ‘I understand why you need to go. And I’m coming with you.’ There is a long pause before she speaks again. ‘But, Sienna, what if it had nothing to do with what he did all those years ago, and everything to do with what we all did?’

FORTY-SIX

Abby

Waterloo station is crowded this morning. She watches people flocking to the escalators, rushing to work; it’s like standing still in a hurricane. Sienna isn’t here yet, nowhere Abby can see her, at least, but it’s not yet the time they’ve arranged to meet. She tries not to think about Mark, and Brighton – she’ll deal with that later. This morning is too important for her to lose focus, so she shoves it from her mind, keeps it at bay for now.

A hand on her shoulder startles her.

‘Sorry,’ Sienna says. ‘You were miles away. Are you okay?’

Abby still can’t get used to the change in their interactions. It appears that the animosity has gone from both sides, leaving behind a stifled courtesy. It’s far from friendship and loaded with wariness, but it’s something, at least.

‘I’m okay,’ she replies. ‘As okay as I can be considering what we’re about to do. How about you? This is huge, isn’t it?’ There’s the strong possibility that Leela Hall’s family no longer live at the address they have, but Abby doesn’t mention this again. She’s already been through every possibility with Sienna, including the one where they’ve got the wrong woman, or whoever answers refuses to talk to them.

‘It’s necessary,’ Sienna reminds her. ‘We both need to know what happened, don’t we?’ She doesn’t wait for an answer. ‘Let’s go. We can get a cab from outside the station.’

Handy for Leela being so close to where Greg worked, Abby thinks but doesn’t mention.
