‘He let me in. I didn’t think he would, but he did. That’s how confident he was. It shocked me, Sienna. And scared me. He was like a different person, doing whatever he could to save himself. His career. That must have been how it was when he was with that poor girl.’
‘What are you telling me, Abby? What did you do?’
‘We argued. I lashed out at him. It was like I wasn’t really me, and I was watching myself from a distance, unable to control what I was doing.’
‘Just tell me now!’ Sienna screams. ‘What the hell did you do to Greg?’
FORTY-TWO
Abby
Sienna’s scream pierces her eardrums. She’s got this all wrong and Abby needs to help her understand. Make her understand. This has gone on long enough. ‘No, wait, I didn’t… he was fine when I left. He only had a cut on his face. That’s it. It was just a cut. It wouldn’t even have needed medical attention.’
Sienna falls silent. ‘What are you saying? Tell me everything now.’
So Abby does. She tells Sienna that Greg refused to listen to her, no matter how much she pleaded with him. ‘I’m ashamed to say I even told him that I wouldn’t breathe a word to you, and I probably meant it. I’m sure I would have, but I just needed Greg to listen to me.’
He wouldn’t, though, and in anger and desperation, Abby grabbed the nearest object she could find – a glass that still had water in it – and hurled it at Greg. It smashed into his cheek, and the sight of his blood appearing, trickling down his cheek, made her freeze. The image of him clutching his cheek then staring at his blood-soaked hand will never leave her.
‘He was silent for a moment – in shock probably – but then he shouted at me to get out of his house. I ran, then, without looking back. But he was alive, Sienna. Greg was fine. I even turned around and saw him watching me from the window.’
Sienna is leaning forward, her arms folded defensively across her chest. She’s shaking her head. ‘You must have caused him an injury that he died from later. You did it, you must have. I’ve known all along.’
‘Sienna, listen to me. That makes no sense. His body was found weeks later near Brighton in that canal. It had nothing to do with me. I only cut his face.’ She holds up her hand. ‘I know, that’s awful, but it wasn’t enough to… to kill him.’
‘If this is true, then why haven’t you told the police? I know they’ve spoken to you.’
