‘No. Maybe being with Greg just made her see things differently. Or see me differently, at least. Maybe she talked to him about me, and he encouraged her to leave.’ He buries his head in his hands. ‘I’d do anything to take back that night. When you suggested it, I wish I’d said no. I wanted to. I didn’t think for one second Abby would go for it, but then of course she wouldn’t be jealous – even though you’re an attractive woman – she didn’t feel enough for me to worry. In fact, maybe she wanted something to happen between us. To ease her own guilt.’
‘That’s ridiculous, Rob. And if nothing else, Abby knows I’m not the kind of person who would do something like that.’
He stares at her. ‘How do we know who we really are until we’re pushed to the limit?’
Rob’s asleep on the sofa downstairs. Sienna had no choice but to suggest it; there was no way she’d let him drive to his parents’ after consuming so much alcohol.
Besides, she owes it to him. This is all her fault.
PART FOUR
FORTY
Abby
October
Weeks have passed since she left Rob, and in that time, she’s barely seen Mark and hasn’t spent the night with him. Out of respect for Rob, she wants to leave some space before she jumps into something new. Their relationship isn’t new, though, Mark insists, and he was there long before Rob, but Abby sticks to her guns. Besides, she still can’t be sure that Mark means to see it through this time. It appears that he does; he’s found a banking job in London and rented a flat in Fulham. It’s the other side of London, but close enough. She’s in no rush.
As time has progressed, she’s finding it easier to leave Greg behind. The police still don’t know who’s responsible, and it seems the trail has run cold. It’s no longer being reported, and she doesn’t know whether this makes her feel uneasy or comforted.
Rob is keeping away from her, and she understands this. It’s for the best. Out of everyone, though, it’s Sienna her thoughts turn to the most. Abby hasn’t contacted her – respecting Sienna’s wishes – but she yearns to reach out in some way, to see how she’s doing. She is the one who’s suffered the most in this.
Despite this lull, this blanket of serenity that’s wrapped itself around her, Abby should know better than to believe it’s over.
