‘Sorry I’m late.’ Greg appears, pulling at his tie. ‘So what have I missed?’

After this, the rest of the night proceeds exactly as she knows it will – the men discussing the latest medical advances or surgeries while Joanna, Nikki and Eva exclude her as much as possible. She deliberately makes this difficult for them, taking every opportunity to insert herself into their conversation, but eventually she tires of this game and is left feeling dejected. They want her to feel like an outsider; their judgement of her screams from their pores. She’s not on their career level; therefore, she’s not worthy of their company.

It’s not like her to give in to them, to anything.

But she can’t stop wondering what Marty was about to say before Greg turned up.

Later, as she lies in bed, she watches Greg through the open door of the en-suite bathroom, listening to the hum of his electric toothbrush as he meticulously brushes his teeth. Four years together have done nothing to lessen the attraction she feels for him, and she longs to feel the warmth of his skin against hers. She can’t remember the last time he touched her – has it been weeks? Surely not months? Things always seem to get in the way. Tonight, she is determined to change this.

When Greg finishes in the bathroom and climbs under the duvet, Sienna slides her arm across his chest, surprised by how cold his skin feels. Placing his hand on hers, he prevents her moving any further along his body. ‘Sienna, I’m really tired. I’m sorry. Today was… let’s just say it was a very long, difficult one.’

Will tomorrow be the day he finally runs out of excuses?

THREE

Abby

She is restless today, has been since she woke up in the morning to the sound of Rob showering. Normally she’s up before him, even during this time between jobs. That’s how she likes to think of it; she’s not unemployed as such, devoid of a job – her life has simply hit pause. It’s temporary; she will soon be back on her feet, holding her head high. Abby loves to get a head start on the day, to be awake before most people stir and have a moment to catch her breath. Old habits die hard.

Perhaps it’s a sixth sense she doesn’t realise she’s in tune with, but there’s definitely something in the air, even though she’s barely conscious of it. There’s no way she can know that within hours things will be set in motion that will change her life forever.

‘It’s still weird that you’ve gone,’ Mel says, her sigh a static blast down the phone.
