Much later, when she’s at home, away from Abby’s and free from all the words she was spewing, Sienna feels as though she’s losing her mind, that as soon as she tries to cling to something concrete, it vanishes in her grasp. She knows she can no longer trust her own instincts, so all she can do is focus on what she knows for certain: Abby might have been one of the last people to see Greg alive. He was blackmailing her, so what lengths would she go to in order to protect her marriage?
The only other thing Sienna is convinced of is that nothing points to Greg’s murder being a random attack. Wrong place at the wrong time. It’s too much of a coincidence. His wallet hadn’t been taken, and the police had found seventy pounds in there, so it wasn’t a mugging.
If Greg did do what Abby claims, why would he so recklessly expose himself after so many years of keeping it carefully hidden? There has to be more to this. Abby must be lying, covering up for something else. Sienna can’t get sucked into any more lies; she’s had enough. All she wants is to lay Greg to rest now, to work towards finding some peace, yet now this is impossible.
She could call DC Roberts – he would surely be able to find out if there’s any truth in what Abby claims Greg admitted to. Before she even thinks about speaking to the police, she needs to verify what Abby has said for herself. And there’s one thing making her doubt Abby’s confession.
Sienna heard Abby admitting to having an affair. So what game is she playing?
THIRTY-FOUR
Abby
She’d been driving around aimlessly since Sienna left, needing to be out of the house, moving. Until she realised that it was futile; nothing will help. Now she sits in the car outside her house, the engine still running because she can’t bear the silence turning it off will bring. She pulls her hand from the steering wheel and sees it’s shaking. She tries to steady it, but it’s out of her control. Speaking to Sienna tonight has shaken her to her core, and this, she knows, is only just the beginning.
Abby wishes Rob was at home tonight, that she could share this all with him, but she knows that’s not fair to him. It’s been this way all along, his friendship the thing she’s needed most from him, the element that’s bonded her to him, at least on her part.
