But no matter what, she can’t let Greg get away with this.

TWELVE

Sienna

Sienna lies in an empty bed, staring at the ceiling. Greg would be at work now; she’s glad she’s slept through the time he’d have been getting ready. Nothing is right now, and she knows it’s only a matter of time before everything implodes.

She only gets out of bed when Abby’s text comes through, cancelling the coffee they’ve planned this morning. Abby. What is she playing at?

Sienna gives no thought to what she does next, going through the motions of dressing, brushing her hair, applying make-up with so little effort that it’s pointless. Her body is taking over, on some sort of autopilot, until she finds herself standing on Abby’s doorstep.

Perhaps she will appear crazy turning up like this when Abby clearly doesn’t want to see her. Sienna doesn’t care, though, she just needs to know what’s been going on.

Rob answers the door, his eyes widening when he sees her. ‘Sienna, hi! This is a nice surprise. Abby’s not here, though.’

‘Oh.’ She hasn’t considered this might be a possibility. Hasn’t thought beyond coming here. ‘It’s my fault, I should have called first. I was just out and thought I’d pop in and surprise her. I haven’t seen her since the dinner party.’

It’s barely perceptible but Rob’s face reddens slightly.

‘Yeah, it’s been a bit of a hectic week. Abby’s been desperately searching for jobs and, you know, getting her CV up to date.’ He’s fumbling and nervous, unsure what to say to her. Why?

‘Well, I don’t want to interfere with all that.’ She peers past him, into the house. ‘Are you happy with how the house looks so far?’ She wants to keep him talking.

‘Oh yeah, it’s great. Thanks so much for all your help. We really couldn’t have done it without you.’

He’s nervous, she can sense it. They talked for hours that night, discussed things she promised not to share, yet now he’s acting as though she’s a stranger. Sienna smiles. ‘Happy to help. It’s not finished yet, though. There’s the upstairs still to do.’

Rob bites his lip. ‘Yeah, we’re thinking that might have to go on hold for a while. We need to watch our finances until Abby finds a new teaching job.’

It is a plausible excuse, but she senses there’s far more to this. ‘Well, I’m here whenever you’re ready to resume,’ she says, still smiling. ‘I’ll get going then. Will you tell Abby I came by?’

The relief on Rob’s face is palpable. ‘Shall I tell her to call you?’
