Holly holds him tightly, strokes his back to calm him down. All she can think about is how she can fix this mess. Does Sienna know he was here? There is a lot to think about and Holly needs to make sure she ties up every loose end; otherwise Jackson’s life is over. And that means so too is hers.

‘I’m sorry, Mum,’ Jackson says, over and over.

And she is too. She’s sorry for everything.

EPILOGUE

Greg

Seven Years Ago

He shouldn’t go to her flat. She’ll take it as a sign that he’s changed his mind, that this – whatever it’s been – isn’t over after all. He doesn’t need this grief. Plus, the girl knows how to weaken him, and that’s the biggest problem – he’s still attracted to her. It would be easier if he wasn’t. But he needs to face up to his issues with Holly, without hiding behind this ridiculous affair. Is it a mid-life crisis? He doesn’t know. All he knows is that it’s not worth the consequences of anyone finding out.

Above anything else, he doesn’t want to hurt his son.

He curses himself for giving in to Leela when she pushed herself against him in his office. Sure, they’d been flirting a little, and he’d probably crossed that doctor-patient line way before anything physical happened, but he should never have succumbed to his urges. He thought he was better than that.

Worse still, is the fact that he did it again. And again. Until it turned into something more; in Leela’s eyes at least. He might have enjoyed being with her but it was never worth this.

Still, he’s doing the right thing by giving her the chance to say what she’s got to say in person. He owes her that much.

Just as he’s expected, she answers the door wearing hardly any clothes – just a skimpy short pyjama set. Normally seeing her dressed like this would excite him, but now he just feels on edge. Like he wants to run.

‘You came,’ she says. ‘I didn’t think you would.’

There’s something off about her. She’s unsteady on her feet and her eyes are bloodshot. ‘Have you been drinking?’

Leela smiles. Then she laughs. ‘If only you knew what I’ve been doing, Greg.’ She’s trying to sound sexy, but it smacks of desperation.

He doesn’t ask; he wants to keep this visit as brief as possible. He’s still standing by the front door, doesn’t want to venture any further. ‘Leela, look, I’m sorry about everything. I’m very fond of you. I hope you know that.’ He sounds ridiculous, even to his own ears. People are fond of animals; he’s used a word that diminishes her.
