At first, Abby was convinced that Sienna believed her tonight, but something changed; being ordered to leave her alone in that cold manner is evidence of this. She knows Sienna is grieving and would have been in shock after what Abby revealed, yet there was something there that didn’t feel right. Sienna was emotional, of course she was, but underlying that was something calculated, and it worries Abby.
She turns off the engine and heads towards the front door, stopping on the doorstep to look up at the house. Nothing will ever be the same again, no matter how much she’s tried to put things right.
Greg is dead. Murdered. Almost everything is out in the open. She can’t lose sight of this.
She’s only been inside for ten minutes when she picks up her mobile and calls Rob. She needs to see him, to try and save what’s left of her marriage, to know if there’s any chance it can be salvaged. Being away from him for the next few days will only make things worse.
‘Hey.’ He sounds drowsy and it’s clear that she’s woken him. It’s only now she checks the time and sees that it’s past ten p.m.
‘I was thinking I’d drive over to Reading and stay there with you? I could help you with the jobs your parents need doing.’
‘Oh.’ He’s alert now. ‘When?’
‘How about now?’
A long pause. ‘Abby, it’s late. It would be way past midnight by the time you got here.’
‘It’s not like it’s a school night, is it?’ She forces a laugh. ‘I’ll just throw some things in a bag, then I’ll be ready to leave.’
More hesitation. ‘Actually, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Just get some rest. I’m taking Mum and Dad out tomorrow, so we’ll be gone most of the day.’
Abby could question him, get more details about where exactly they’re going, but it’s pointless. Rob doesn’t want her to come, and she’s not going to push it. Sienna has got to him.
‘Okay,’ she says.
‘Don’t worry if you can’t get hold of me much tomorrow – we’ve got a busy day planned.’
She says goodbye and stares at her phone. She should feel bad that Rob doesn’t want to be around her, but instead she’s seeing the positive within it: she will use this time alone to fix the mess she’s in.
THIRTY-FIVE
Sienna
Abby is lying, she’s convinced of it. She’s had a week to get her head around what she was told, and she’s come to this conclusion: there is no way Greg would have taken someone’s life. He was a doctor; it goes against everything he stood for, the oath he took to do no harm.
