No, Abby doesn’t. This is something she has to do alone. ‘Thanks, but I’ll be fine. I’ve got the truth on my side, haven’t I? Surely that’s the only thing that’s important.’
But this is not what she has to fear about visiting Sienna: Abby wasn’t the only person who was angry with Greg, and she knows she wasn’t the only one with something to hide.
FORTY-ONE
Sienna
She doesn’t know how it’s happened, but they seem to have formed a little family: Sienna, Rob and Jackson. Rob never went to stay with his parents after he stayed that first night at Sienna’s, and when she offered him a roof over his head, at least until he and Abby sell their house, she could tell he wanted to stay as much as she needed him here. ‘It will be easier for you to get to work,’ she’d said. ‘Reading is a long commute.’ He hadn’t needed convincing.
Then Holly had called, flustered, because she’d booked a week away for her, Jackson and Andrew, but now Jackson was refusing to go. ‘He’s so distraught and I don’t want to force him,’ she’d explained. ‘I’m going to have to cancel.’
‘No, you’re not,’ Sienna had told her. ‘He can stay here with me.’
There’s never a moment when she doesn’t feel Greg’s absence: heavy, like a pile of rocks weighing down on her, a crushing pain she doesn’t think will ever lessen; but with Rob and Jackson here – two people she can look after and focus on – she is at least able to cope. She won’t allow herself to think about when she will be alone again, and shuts it away somewhere in her mind, buries it with action.
Now the three of them sit down to breakfast, and she watches them both eat, glancing from one to the other as if they will both disappear if she doesn’t keep checking they’re still here. She’s terrified of losing these moments. At first, she’d worried how Jackson would react to Rob staying here, but the two of them immediately hit it off, and Jackson knows Rob spends every night in the other spare room.
‘So you’re going to your friend’s house today, Jax?’ Rob asks.
‘Yep. Josh. He’s got a PlayStation 5.’
‘That’s cool.’ Rob turns to Sienna. ‘And what are your plans for today?’
She’s got coursework to do, she tells him. This has been another lifesaver for her. That, and her regular phone calls with DC Roberts.
When Jackson heads off to get his bag ready, Rob asks her how it’s going with the police. ‘It’s so hard to believe that in this world of technology they haven’t been able to find out anything,’ he whispers. ‘No glimpses of him on CCTV. Nothing.’
‘I know.’
