She hurries to the window and watches him throw his bags into the boot of his car. She’s never seen him like this before.
And that’s when she realises there is so much more to this than even she knows.
THIRTY-NINE
Sienna
‘What’s happened?’ Sienna asks. ‘You look dreadful.’
Drunk, she means. In the time it’s taken her to get to this bar in Islington, it’s clear that Rob has tried to drown his misery in alcohol. He wouldn’t tell her anything on the phone, only begged her to meet him at this place. She tried everything to get him to come to her instead; she doesn’t feel comfortable venturing out of her house. She’s not sure why; it’s just an irrational feeling she can’t seem to control.
‘I’m… not drunk,’ he says. ‘I’ve only had this one.’ He holds up his glass. A beer this time, not wine.
Sienna glances at the table; there are no other glasses on the table, but they would have been cleared away. There’s no way the one he’s holding is his first. She slides into a chair. ‘What’s going on, Rob?’
‘Abby and I are over.’ He takes a large swig of his drink.
‘What?’
He nods. ‘Yep. Our marriage is over. Dead.’
Sienna instinctively reaches for his hand. She should have expected this, yet it still comes as a shock. ‘I’m so sorry. What happened?’
He pulls his hand away to reach for his glass again. ‘It’s all wrong. I got it all wrong. Everything.’ He downs the rest of his glass and stands. ‘I need another one. You?’
‘Just water,’ she says. No alcohol has passed her lips since the dinner party. It hasn’t been a conscious decision; she just can’t bear to have any. ‘Actually, let me go. You just sit down.’
When she comes back, he reaches for the drink and immediately takes a large sip.
‘Okay, Rob. Talk to me. So you’ve moved out?’
He stares at the table, shaking his head. ‘Yes. And you were wrong. We got it all wrong.’
‘What do you mean? What was wrong?’
He slams his fist on the table. ‘How could I have made such a terrible mistake!’
‘Okay, Rob, you need to calm down and just tell me what’s going on.’
He looks up at her. ‘Abby didn’t sleep with Greg. You were wrong.’
‘No. I know what I heard. So Abby’s convinced you that she didn’t, is that it? Of course she’s going to deny it – she wants to protect your marriage, cling on to it at all costs, she—’
