‘I need to tell you something, and this is probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to say to anyone.’ A lump forms in her throat as she looks at Sienna. She’s about to destroy this grieving woman’s life even more than it already has been. She almost can’t do it; perhaps it’s better to let it lie, to bury it along with Greg. After all, she is the only other person left who knows. It never has to come out. They can all live in oblivion; surely, it’s better that way?

She’s started now, though, and Sienna’s eyes are a melting pot of fear, sadness and hatred.

‘I already know,’ Sienna says. ‘I’ve known for a long time.’

Abby is confused. There’s no way. Is it possible that Greg told her after all? But then why hasn’t Sienna already confronted her?

‘You know? How?’

‘That doesn’t matter. But I want to hear it from you. Go on, then – tell me how exactly you ended up sleeping with my husband?’

Abby feels sick; she hadn’t expected this, and it’s thrown her off course. For a moment she can’t speak. ‘No, Sienna,’ she manages to say. ‘No, you’ve got it all wrong.’

Sienna shakes her head, stands up.

‘So, even now, even after Greg is found murdered, you can’t be honest! You’re a despicable woman, Abby, and I wish I’d never laid eyes on you. I’d do anything to go back and erase meeting you… you’re just—’

‘Sienna, just stop! Please, I’m trying to tell you something and you need to listen.’ Abby doesn’t wait for a response; she needs to say it now and stop Sienna leaving. ‘That night of the husband swap, Greg told me something he’s never told anyone. I don’t think he meant to, he was so drunk it just came out, and then it was too late for him to take it back.’

Sienna stares at her. ‘What are you talking about? You’re not making sense.’

‘Sienna, listen to me. Greg told me that he killed someone.’

THIRTY-THREE

Sienna

Sienna stares at Abby and, for a moment, it’s as though her friend is speaking a language she’s not familiar with. Then her words come sharply into focus, like knife blades slicing her skin. Why is Abby saying this? ‘What are you talking about?’ she manages to ask.

‘He killed someone, Sienna. He admitted it. There’s no way it was a misunderstanding; you’ll see that when I tell you the whole story.’

Sienna says nothing, fights the urge to run from this house. Whatever she’s got to say, Sienna needs to hear it.
