Rob turns away and walks back to the table, grabbing his glass of water before he sits down. ‘I knew that night I agreed to the swap that it was a mistake. But I kept silent, and there isn’t a minute that goes by where I don’t regret that. You were flirting with him that night. Oh, it was subtle, but I saw it. I felt it.’

He’s not making sense; Abby was never interested in Greg. ‘No, Rob, I wasn’t. No way.’

‘You were so drunk, you probably don’t even remember. Maybe you didn’t even realise you were doing it.’

‘If you thought that, then why did you agree to it?’

‘Because I trusted you, and at the time I thought it was harmless. It’s only afterwards I looked back and saw it for what it was.’

She takes a deep breath. ‘I’ve already said it to Sienna, and I’ll say it again to you: nothing happened between me and Greg. Nothing at all.’

‘That’s just it. That’s what makes it even worse.’

‘Rob, you need to stop this. You’re not making sense.’

‘It doesn’t matter if you actually did anything or not, don’t you get that?’ He’s raising his voice now, his face flushed with rage. Again, she is shocked by how different the person standing before her is from the man she married.

‘I think you should go now,’ she says.

‘What goes around, comes around, Abby. Just remember that.’

Once he’s gone, she notices that she’s shaking. She’s not sure what just happened, but she knows it’s something huge.

FORTY-THREE

Sienna

Everyone deals with grief in their own way; Sienna knows this. And she doubts there are many who experience it in the way that she is now. The momentous pain of losing Greg is like a tightly zipped coat she can’t take off, and that pain is multiplied by what he did. By the things he kept hidden from her. She believes Abby now; with no marriage for her to protect, there is no need for her to lie any more, nothing to lose and nothing to win either. Rob knows everything – it’s all out in the open. Except for what happened to Greg, and why.

‘I hope you don’t mind me being here,’ Sienna says to Rosa. ‘There are some things I need to… know about Greg I suppose.’

Rosa smiles. She’s a patient woman; something Sienna is grateful for in this moment. She pulls her glasses off and rubs the corners of her eyes. ‘I’m happy to help, if I can. Like I said on the phone, I don’t know what I can tell you that you don’t already know. You were his wife; you knew him far better than the rest of us.’
