Still, her panic doesn’t subside, even when they reach Sienna’s house and see no sign of her car. There’s every chance she’s still at home.

‘Her car’s not in the drive. She must be out.’ Rob seems almost disappointed. Abby doesn’t want to acknowledge what this means.

‘I’ll go to the door and check,’ she tells Rob. ‘If she is in, it might be too overwhelming for her if we’re both standing on her doorstep. We don’t want her to think this is an ambush.’ Abby doesn’t believe there’s any chance of Sienna feeling this way; she is too confident, too calculated, even since Greg’s disappearance.

‘Okay,’ Rob concedes. ‘Maybe you’re right.’

Heading to her front door feels like walking the plank. If she’s home, then there’s nothing to stop her spurting out all those things about Greg again. Abby takes a deep breath and presses the doorbell, glancing back at Rob in the car before standing back to wait.

There’s no answer, and Abby can’t decide how she feels about this. Perhaps it would be better to get it over with, because one thing she’s sure of is that her judgement day is coming.

She waits another minute before making her way back to the car, shaking her head. ‘I don’t know where she could be,’ she tells Rob, and it’s the truth. Even though she and Sienna have been in each other’s lives for months now, Abby really has little idea about her life outside of their friendship, and outside of her marriage.

‘We can try again tomorrow,’ Rob says as she gets in the car and clicks on her seat belt.

Abby realises she might be powerless to convince him otherwise.

TWENTY-ONE

Sienna

Saturday. A week since she laid eyes on her husband, and she’s learned that people are wrong when they say that time heals. Nothing about this gets easier with each passing day. Not one thing.

Sometimes she talks to him as if he is there in the house with her and can hear her words as they echo through the empty rooms. She asks him where he is. How he has found it so easy to hurt her. Or if he is hurt himself. She organises his clothes, washing them and hanging them in the wardrobe just as he does, cooks smaller portions of his favourite dinners and barely touches them.

Another thing she’s learned is that sometimes we don’t even know ourselves; we can’t know what we’re capable of until we’re pushed to our limits.
