‘Her name was Tamara and they’d been together since university.’ She catches Sienna’s surprise. ‘Yes, a long time. Anyway, I met Rob when I was on a night out with a friend of mine. I’d just split up with an ex and wasn’t in a good place. So when Mel started talking to Rob’s friend in the bar, we all just amalgamated. Spent the evening drinking and chatting. Nothing else.’ She glances at Sienna, checks her expression, surprised to find herself desperate to be believed. For all the other things Abby may have done, getting involved physically with Rob when he was with someone else isn’t one of them. Sienna’s face is impassive, but it’s clear that she’s listening intently, eager to hear more.
Abby continues. ‘Have you ever had that feeling that you’re talking to someone familiar, even though you’ve only just met them?’
Sienna nods silently.
‘Well, that’s how I felt talking to Rob that night. I felt like he was someone who was meant to be in my life.’
‘When you know, you know,’ Sienna says. Abby immediately senses that she’s talking about Greg as much as about her and Rob.
‘That’s just it, though,’ she continues. ‘I didn’t know anything, not like that. I just saw him as a friend.’
Sienna’s eyes narrow. ‘Really? Just a friend?’
‘I really wasn’t looking for any kind of relationship, and he’d told me about his girlfriend. But we exchanged numbers and kept in touch. We ended up texting every day and meeting up sometimes. Nothing ever happened, though. Then one day Rob told me he had feelings for me and said it was crushing him because he didn’t want to hurt his girlfriend. They’d been together for so long, and even his mum referred to her as her daughter-in-law. She was part of the family.’
‘Had your feelings for Rob grown at this point?’ Sienna asks.
This is something Abby has already asked herself over the years. ‘No,’ she says, surprising herself with her answer. ‘Not in that way. Not then.’
Sienna is nodding, sucking in all this information. Will she use it against Abby? It doesn’t matter, though; this is nothing Rob doesn’t already know.
‘Then what happened?’ Sienna asks.
‘I tried to put him off. I’d never met Tamara, but it was clear, from everything he’d said, how much she loved Rob. I knew I could never love him in that same way, so I had to make him see that we shouldn’t be together.’
Sienna’s face crinkles. ‘How?’
