There’s no password; she’s straight in, staring at his desktop background – a desert scene which could be Las Vegas. It’s too much to hope that Mark’s left his email open, but she can have a root around and see if there’s anything worrying on there. She needs to know what she’s getting into before she throws herself deeper into this. Even though she’s been in it with him since she was a teenager.

She doesn’t find anything, and she’s about to give up when she notices the photos tab. Somehow it feels worse to click on it, but she does – there are thousands of photos on there, most of them of him and Cassie. It doesn’t upset Abby to see them, to be a witness to how happy they look in every photo, because she is the one he has chosen. She understands now what he meant about not being jealous of Rob.

A photo catches her eye. She stares at it, but it takes a moment to realise that she’s staring at a picture of herself. She doesn’t know where it was taken but it’s recent. She’s confused. It’s not recent enough. And it’s of her walking out of the fitness centre in Winchmore Hill, where she met Sienna. She checks the date: fifteenth of April this year. There are more. Candid photos of her she has no knowledge of him taking. And then she sees the one of her and Greg talking in the park the day he disappeared.

Abby’s experienced so much in her life – grief, pain, every emotion it’s possible to feel – yet she’s never before felt like this, as if the core of her has been scraped away. Mark. The one person she thought she had an unbreakable connection with. Now the ground has crumbled beneath her and she’s in freefall.

Using her phone, she takes photos of all the pictures of her then shuts down Mark’s computer. She needs to get out of here before he comes back.

Abby never thought she’d find herself turning to Sienna again, yet here she is standing on her doorstep, texting her because it’s too late to ring the bell:

Can we talk? It’s urgent.

‘Why didn’t you ring the bell?’ Sienna asks when she opens the door. Her hair is damp, and she’s wearing a white fluffy dressing gown; definitely not one of Greg’s this time.

‘I didn’t want to wake Jackson if he’s asleep.’

Sienna smiles. ‘That boy could sleep through an earthquake.’

‘Or Rob. I don’t really want to see him.’
