They’re at his flat, and she’s come here for answers. ‘I’m exhausted,’ Abby says. It’s not a lie; the visit to Kerry Hall’s home this morning has depleted her mental energy, which in turn has left her physically drained. As well as this, she’s sick of not being able to trust anyone, and now she is forced to add Mark to that list. None of this is over – she feels it like a chill creeping over her bones, and she can’t shake the feeling that worse is to come.

‘You’re going through a separation, and about to start a new job – it’s no wonder you’re feeling so tired.’ He strokes her hand. ‘You haven’t been sleeping well, have you?’

‘No.’ Not for a long time.

‘You’ll get through it, you always do.’

She’s adamant that she will. If all of this has taught her anything, it’s that she can deal with whatever is thrown her way. Right now, though, she needs to know what’s going on with Mark. Why he’s lying to her. If it’s got anything to do with Greg. The rational part of her brain tells her that’s impossible – there’s no way Mark could have any connection to Greg, but she needs to be sure.

‘I’ll go and get the food,’ Mark says. ‘It should be ready by the time I get there.’ They’ve ordered Chinese food from the restaurant on the High Street; Abby knows they only do collections, that Mark would offer to collect it. ‘I won’t be long.’

Once he’s gone, she stands in the middle of his living room, unsure where to begin. There’s not much in Mark’s flat yet; most of his things are still at his home in Ipswich, which is yet to be sold. Two buyers have already pulled out. Abby hopes she and Rob don’t have this much trouble selling – she needs to put all of this behind her, including Rob and Sienna. Whether Mark comes with her or not depends on what she finds out tonight. It will be a shame to let the school down, especially at such short notice, but she’s got to think about herself now. Her mental health. Her safety. Before it’s too late.

She scans Mark’s bookshelves, finding nothing out of the ordinary. His laptop is on the coffee table; he’d been working before she got here. Her steps towards it are tentative. This is wrong, an invasion of his privacy – but he’s lied to her, and she needs to know why. This is what she keeps in her mind as she reaches down to it and taps the keyboard.
