Sienna assures her that she doesn’t need to worry about Rob. He’s fallen asleep on the sofa, and she’d just been trying to figure out how she’d get him into bed. ‘Drunk,’ she explains. ‘It’s fine for you to come in.’
Outside the living room, Abby stands by the door staring at Rob. She feels a stab of pain to see him like this, and to know that she is the one who did this to him.
‘He’ll be okay,’ Sienna assures her. ‘He just needs to work through it all. It will take time, but he’ll get there.’
Abby wants to ask Sienna how she can show such kindness towards her after everything that’s happened, but she already knows the answer. Sienna is a better person than she is. ‘Are you sure Jackson’s asleep?’
She nods. ‘Yes. Abby, what’s going on? You’re being weird.’
‘Come in the kitchen.’ Abby leads the way, even though this isn’t her house and the woman who owns it is no longer a friend.
‘I’ve just been with Mark,’ Abby whispers. ‘And I found these.’ She taps on her phone and hands it to Sienna. ‘These photos were on his laptop. He went out to get food and I… I had a look without him knowing.’
Sienna’s eyes are wide circles as she stares at Abby’s phone. ‘These are of you and Greg. There are loads of them.’
‘I know. It was when we met up in the park the day he blackmailed me.’
‘The day he disappeared.’
Abby nods.
‘Why the hell has your boyfriend got them?’
‘I don’t know. That’s what I’ve been asking myself all the way here. It doesn’t make any sense.’
‘None of this ever has, has it? Did you ask him about them? And about Brighton?’
‘No. I just left before he came back. I didn’t tell him I was going, and I’ve been ignoring his phone calls. If I talk to him now, I don’t trust what I’ll say, and I want to be sure before I start accusing him of anything. I’ve done enough of that already and I’ve always been wrong. I thought you—’
‘Don’t say it,’ Sienna warns. ‘Please don’t say those words.’
Abby stays silent.
‘You need to go and confront him. Tell him you’ll go to the police if he doesn’t give you a good explanation for why he’s taken all these photos of you, and why he denied ever going to Brighton. We should report him anyway.’
This is exactly what Abby needs to avoid. ‘I can’t let it all come out about me meeting Greg and him blackmailing me. Surely you can see that?’
