‘This is about your friend, isn’t it? Did you get a chance to talk to her about it all?’

‘Yes, we did. And she denied it again. I just find it hard to believe.’

‘Why? Maybe you heard it wrong that day, or misunderstood? What makes you so convinced?’

She’s not, though. Not any more. There are only two options: either Greg was sleeping with one of his patients and he killed her, or he slept with Abby. She wants to believe the latter, because she can’t even begin to stomach the other alternative. It’s not Greg, not the man she knew. So what does that say about their whole marriage?

‘All I know is that she’s lying about something.’

‘Talk to her, Sienna. That’s the only way you’ll know. Anyway, in answer to your question, no, as far as I’m aware, Greg never did anything during our marriage. I’m not saying it’s impossible, people can always find a way to cheat, can’t they? But I’d be very surprised if he’d even had the time. He didn’t even have time for me, let alone another woman.’

Holly’s words echo what Marty has already said.

‘I hope that can put your mind at ease?’ Holly squeezes her arm.

It’s not the proof that Sienna needs, but it’s something. Holly was married to him; she would have sensed something, surely?

‘There’s something else I need to ask. Do you think there’s any way Greg was hiding anything about his past from you?’

Holly’s eyes widen. ‘Like what?’

‘An affair with a patient?’

Holly frowns. ‘I don’t think so. We were really close, especially in the beginning of our relationship. I told him all sorts of things about me, so I’m sure he would have told me something like that.’

Sienna makes a decision now; one she intends to see through until the end. Abby is lying, and there’s only one reason she would make up this story about Greg: because she knows what happened to him.

Sienna makes coffee for them both and a hot chocolate for Jackson. She takes it to him in the living room, where he’s watching television, and when he looks up at her, she can see his eyes are glassy with tears.

‘How are you doing, Jax?’ she asks. She’s never shortened his name like this before, but it feels right.

He shrugs. ‘I still miss Dad.’

She sits beside him on the sofa. ‘I do too, every single day. I don’t think that will ever go away, but we’ll find a way to live with it. Together, okay?’

He nods, tries to smile, before turning back to the television.

‘You’re so good with him,’ Holly says when Sienna’s back in the kitchen. ‘He really likes being here.’
