Sienna offers a smile. ‘You’re right. I’m not okay. But I’m managing. If that makes sense. I’m functioning. And that’s got to count for something, hasn’t it?’
‘Of course.’ She picks up her fork. ‘And this is delicious. I can’t believe you wouldn’t let me treat you to a takeaway.’
Sienna needed to cook, to have her hands so busy that there was no place for intrusive thoughts. A break from her own mind. The meal she’s made is a vegetarian ragu; since Greg’s body was found Sienna can’t stomach even the thought of meat. She doesn’t tell Holly that she’s been living on eggs and toast. Things that don’t need a lot of commitment, and don’t turn her stomach. ‘How about you, Jackson? Do you like it?’
Across the table, he nods. ‘Yes, thanks.’ Yet his plate has hardly been touched.
‘This is the most he’s eaten for a while,’ Holly says. ‘Don’t take it personally.’
Sienna assures her that she won’t. ‘How about I put the TV on?’ she suggests. ‘Your mum can help me clear up.’
Jackson’s face brightens, and Sienna is relieved. She needs the chance to talk to Holly in private.
When she comes back from setting Jackson up in the living room, Holly is already clearing the kitchen. ‘Sorry. Force of habit. I haven’t forgotten this isn’t my house, I promise.’
‘No, it’s fine. I appreciate the help.’ She begins loading the dishwasher, all the time glancing at Holly, wondering how she will bring up what she needs to ask her. Sienna has always been outspoken, never shied away from confronting things that need to be said, yet now can’t seem to begin.
‘Can we talk?’ she asks when they’ve finished. ‘In here?’
‘Of course. Actually, I thought there was something on your mind, but I didn’t want to push you.’
‘And there I was thinking I’m quite good at putting on a brave face.’
‘Well, I’d say that’s impossible at the moment, given everything that’s happened.’
Sienna sits at the table, swipes a crumb away. ‘I told you about Greg having an affair, didn’t I?’
‘Yes, and I told you it didn’t seem like something he’d do. At least, not the Greg I knew.’
‘I need to know if you meant that, or if maybe you were just trying to make me feel better? I just wonder if… he ever might have done it before?’
Holly frowns. ‘Are you asking if he might have had an affair while we were married?’
‘I’m sorry, but yes, that’s exactly what I’m asking. Or if he’d ever mentioned he might have cheated on anyone in any relationship he’d had before you?’
