A wave of sadness passes through her; it shouldn’t have taken Greg’s death for her to bond with his son. Was it her fault? She thought she’d always made an effort, but maybe it wasn’t enough. Maybe she didn’t feel like a mother figure to him until now. ‘I enjoy having him here. I’m sorry that it’s without Greg.’
Holly puts down her cup. ‘That’s not your fault. What happened to Greg is so awful, but don’t ever blame yourself.’
She does, though, even if she hasn’t been able to admit to it until now. She’s directed so much anger towards Abby that she hasn’t stopped to consider her own role. Greg went missing after they argued. The last words they shared together were venomous. She only has herself to blame for that.
‘Can I ask you something, Holly?’
‘I hope you know by now that you can. You don’t need to watch what you say around me either because I’m Greg’s ex-wife.’
‘When you were still married to Greg, I saw you together once at the hospital when you came to see him. I didn’t really know him well then, but there was something about the way you two were together that stayed with me. Even to this day I can picture you both so clearly. If two people ever seemed so right together then it was you two.’
Holly’s eyes widen; Sienna has caught her off guard. ‘I did go and meet him for lunch sometimes, when we could both get away for a couple of hours. It didn’t happen often, but it was nice when we could make it work.’ She sighs. ‘Our timetables were so out of sync it’s a wonder we lasted as long as we did.’
Seven years they were married, Sienna remembers. ‘What was Greg like when you first got married?’
‘Are you sure you want me to talk about that?’
Sienna nods. She wants to talk about Greg, to finally fill in the pieces his silence had never allowed her to. This is what she’s wanted from the moment she let him into her life.
‘He was a medical student when we met, and I worked part time in the bar they all used to go to in the evenings. I was always so tired – going to classes all day and then working in that place. I don’t know how I did it, but I needed to support myself through uni, so I just got on with it. I guess I had a lot more energy in my twenties.’ She smiles. ‘I remember having a rule about never dating anyone I met in the bar and, until Greg walked in, I’d stuck to it, even though I’d been tempted a few times.’
