‘That’s so kind of you, Mum, Dad,’ Rob begins. ‘I’m not sure I could take a week off work at the moment, though.’
‘We understand,’ Eric says. ‘Shame, though. We don’t see you often enough, or for long enough.’
‘How about a few days then?’ Lillian offers. ‘I’m sure you’ll be able to find a last-minute flight. You can even work out there if you have to.’
Abby stares at Rob, silently praying for him to say no, to not be talked into this by Lillian. She was good at doing that. ‘Um, we’ll see,’ he said. ‘I do have some leave stored up from before the promotion, so maybe I can take a few days. You’re not paying for us, though.’
Lillian smiles. She’s a fraction away from getting her own way, just as she always does with Rob. Not being with Abby is the one thing she’s never been able to convince him of. ‘It will be lovely. We always took you away on holiday as a child, even if it was somewhere in the UK. It’s important to recharge the batteries, isn’t it?’ She turns to Abby when she says this.
Rob nods. ‘We’ll have a chat about it and get back to you.’
‘Don’t take too long, will you?’ Lillian warns. ‘Now, who’d like dessert?’
‘Are you okay?’ Abby asks Rob when they’re driving home. He’s been quiet since they set off and it’s not hard to guess where his mind is.
He pats her leg, keeps his eyes fixed on the road. ‘Yeah, I was just thinking about Sienna. And Greg. We should check she’s okay, shouldn’t we? I can’t get the vision of her turning up at three a.m. like that out of my head. And her mentioning the police. I know you tried earlier, but why don’t we stop off there on the way home and see if she’s in now? It’s not that late. She’s not replying to either of us. What if she’s… done something to herself? You hear about it all the time, don’t you? She was pretty desperate, wasn’t she?’
‘I think she’s probably just taking time away from everyone to sort things out in her head.’
‘I don’t mind dropping you home and going by myself, if you’re tired?’
There is no way she can let Rob go by himself and pushing reasons not to go will only arouse his suspicion, so Abby is forced to agree. If Sienna answers this time, then she will just maintain that she doesn’t know what Sienna’s talking about. Abby is on fragile ground, but until she knows for sure what Greg has said, denial is the safest option.
