‘This isn’t your fault, Sienna.’ Her voice is firm, and in the background, Sienna hears the sound of a fridge opening. ‘Can I do anything?’
‘The police are saying he hasn’t used any of his bank cards or taken any money out. Nothing. If he had, that might have told us something.’ Us. Because of Jackson, she and Holly are equally invested in finding Greg. She is not totally alone.
‘It’s possible he had enough money on him to last a while. I hope the police will keep checking his account,’ Holly says. She doesn’t need to explain why; if more time goes by without any activity, then Sienna’s worst fears will be realised. Unless, of course, Greg doesn’t want to be found. In which case he’d have had to draw out a lot of money to live on, taking it out in small instalments so it didn’t look suspicious. Either way, Sienna might soon have an answer.
‘Can I help with Jackson in any way?’ she offers. She needs to focus on him now; this isn’t just about her. ‘I know I’m not exactly—’
‘That’s really kind of you. I think he just needs time, but I’ll keep you updated. Please just look after yourself. And call me if you need to talk.’
Once they’ve ended the call, Sienna sits in the garden with her laptop, researching husbands who have gone missing. She needs to read stories of hope, to know that men who vanish do sometimes come back. She also wants to learn the reasons why they disappear in the first place.
Usually, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin is a tonic, able to obliterate anything negative from her mind, but as she reads, there are no happy endings, and deep in her gut she fears that this will also be true for her. She may as well be sitting in a snowstorm.
She doesn’t plan what happens next – it all just falls into place, born from her need to find Greg. Whatever he’s done, she wants to hear it from him, to know that he at least values her enough to talk to her, that their years of marriage haven’t been worthless. Only then will she be able to move on; how could she without having the full story? All she has now are her assumptions, and an overwhelming fear that what little she does know is only just the surface.
But she is conflicted in her thoughts. The small chance that Greg hasn’t left her eats away at her. What if he didn’t want to disappear? Everything comes back to one thing: Greg would never leave Jackson.
