‘And have you spoken to her about this?’

Sienna recalls the last time she saw Abby; how her expression had been so flat, and calm, despite the fact that Sienna had been screaming at her on her doorstep in the middle of the night. ‘Not yet,’ she tells DC Roberts. ‘I wanted to report it first.’

She watches him, but there’s no way to guess what he’s thinking. ‘I know my husband’s affair doesn’t seem like a police matter, I get that, I really do. I know by itself that it isn’t, but I also know Greg, and he would never have run away from this. He would have stayed to face the music, to tell me to my face.’

‘Mrs Wells, with all due respect, people do all sorts of things out of character when they’re in a new or tricky situation. We can’t second-guess people. You’re right to inform us about any detail to do with him, though. We’ll definitely be contacting Abby Nichols to see if she might know anything about your husband’s last movements.’

Sienna has thought about this all night, and still isn’t sure what Abby’s exact involvement might be. ‘Thank you. And I’m sorry I didn’t give you her name before. I didn’t think I had reason to.’

DC Roberts stands. ‘I’ll keep in touch,’ he says, handing her his card. ‘And if you think of anything else then please call.’

At the door, Sienna asks him to wait. ‘I’m not bitter about Greg having an affair,’ she says. ‘I need you to know that. I’m not out for revenge or anything like that – all I want to do is find him, so I know he’s okay. I can handle the truth. I’m just not good with the unknown.’

DC Roberts appraises her; Sienna knows he will be having trouble figuring her out. She is a jigsaw piece with all the wrong edges.

In times of crisis Sienna has always been a loner, never wanting to turn to other people for help, preferring – or needing – to deal with things herself. To prove that she is strong and capable. Nothing can knock her down, and life has tried its best. So in a way, as much as it causes her pain, it comes as a relief that she no longer has Abby to depend on. From the beginning, their friendship has taken her by surprise. Normally she keeps people at a distance by talking openly and confidently, yet at the same time keeping part of herself hidden. Abby changed that; her defences had caved in. She became open to trusting someone.

And now Abby has done this to her.
