‘Are you sure I can’t get you anything to drink?’ She’s already asked him, but she almost wants to stall the moment he will begin talking, even though she is desperate for all the information he can give her.

‘I’m fine, thanks.’ He flicks through the file he’s been holding. ‘As I mentioned on the phone, I’ll be overseeing this case now. We’re concerned that there’s been no action on any of your husband’s cards, and no activity on his bank account. And it’s been six days now.’

Sienna feels like her insides are being crushed. ‘How can he still be okay, then? Wherever he is he’ll need money, won’t he?’ She’s fully aware that she’s asking questions nobody yet has an answer to, but she needs to let them out.

‘I know this is difficult, but it’s important not to assume the worst. We’re looking at every detail of his life, and we’ll keep you fully informed.’

She stares at him, fights the urge to scream out that he needs to be doing more, that he shouldn’t just be sitting in her living room talking when something might have happened to Greg. She knows this is highly irrational and smothers these intrusive thoughts.

‘You said there was something else you wanted to inform us of?’

Despite the fact that DC Roberts has taken over the investigation – a sure sign that they will be doing everything they can to find Greg – she can’t help seeing herself through everyone else’s lens. She is a betrayed wife, out for revenge, or overdramatising everything for attention. But she knows she is right, that there’s more to this, and in these last few days she’s had to learn to pay no mind to how she looks to others.

She takes a deep breath. ‘I’ve just found out that a friend of mine – Abby Nichols – was having an affair with my husband before he went missing.’

DC Roberts’s eyes widen. ‘I see. Go on.’

‘I overheard her on the phone, admitting it to someone. She didn’t know I could hear.’ Sienna knows exactly how this sounds, like she’s a teenager gossiping about someone. But this is her marriage. Her life.

DC Roberts jots something down on a blank sheet of paper. ‘I see. She’s not someone we’ve spoken to about your husband, is she? She wasn’t on the list of his friends you provided us with.’

‘No, I… she’s not really a friend of his; they only know each other through me.’ There are other reasons Sienna hasn’t mentioned Abby before, but of course she won’t explain this to DC Roberts; he can’t know about what they did the night of the dinner party. She can’t have them knowing about the role she has played in this.
