While the hospital appointment might be legitimate, Sienna knows that shopping with her mother-in-law could still be a lie. She will need to be in and out as quickly as possible. If she’s caught there, there will be no way to explain her presence, no way back.
When she’s finished at home, she makes her way back to Abby’s house, fully aware that what she’s embarking on is reckless. She has no idea what she’s hoping to achieve. What evidence could there possibly be to prove that Abby is lying to her? Yet still she is compelled to go through with this, desperate enough to try anything, no matter how futile it seems, or how risky.
At least twice she almost turns back. There is an alternative – she can just come out with it and confront Abby directly, tell her about her suspicions. There must be something left of their friendship. Maybe they’d even laugh about it later, when Greg comes back, and all of this is behind them.
But her feet keep moving in the direction of Abby’s house, and before long she is turning the handle of the back door, opening it wide enough to slip inside.
That’s when she hears a voice, somewhere upstairs.
Abby’s voice.
There’s only a split second to make a decision, but what sways it for Sienna is that this is proof of Abby’s deceit. It’s ten o’clock now, so if there was an appointment then it certainly wasn’t at ten. But does this prove anything more than Abby wanting her out of the house? A harmless white lie because she can’t bear to be around Sienna. She can even understand this; she is drenched in grief, it oozes from her pores, and nobody, no matter how saintly they are, can deal with that for too long.
She turns back to the door when something Abby says causes her to freeze.
‘It was a mistake, Mel. Rob can’t find out. He’ll never forgive me. Our marriage will be over. It was just one stupid night and now it’s haunting me.’ There is a silent pause before Abby speaks again. ‘I know, I know.’
She’s on the phone, then. Before Sienna has a chance to consider who she might be talking to, she hears Abby’s footsteps coming down the stairs.
Sienna has to leave before Abby finds her here. At least she got what she came for.
