Holly stares at her, taking her in. Perhaps she feels just as strange being up close to her husband’s new wife as Sienna does. Despite the urgent reason why she’s here, Sienna can’t help wondering what she’s thinking. As an ex-wife, is she making comparisons between them? Scrutinising Greg’s choice of a second wife? They look nothing alike; Holly’s curly red locks are nothing like Sienna’s dark, poker-straight hair. Sienna reminds herself that Holly was the one who left Greg, and she’d had plenty of time to change her mind before she came along.

‘Okay,’ Holly says. ‘Let’s go to my office. It’s this way.’

Sienna follows her as she weaves in between her colleague’s desks, finally stopping outside a closed door. ‘Here we are. We shouldn’t be disturbed.’

Inside, the space is neat and organised, minimal for an office; it’s exactly what Sienna has imagined. Greg would have found it hard to live with someone who surrounded themselves with clutter.

‘I’m sorry we haven’t met properly before,’ Holly says, gesturing for Sienna to take a seat. ‘I just didn’t want to interfere in Greg’s life in any way. Plus, I know from Jackson that you’re a good person.’

She raises her eyebrows. ‘Really? Jackson said that?’

She nods. ‘Maybe not in those words, but from everything he’s ever said it’s clear that he likes you. Why does that surprise you?’

Sienna tries her best to be tactful. ‘I don’t know, he just doesn’t…’

‘Talk much?’ Holly smiles, picks up a pen but does nothing with it. ‘Yep, that’s Jackson for you. He’s always been a quiet child, but I think it hit him really hard when I left Greg.’ She sighs. ‘I’ll forever feel guilty about that.’

‘Mum guilt,’ Sienna offers. ‘But it’s not your fault – you did what you had to do.’

Holly nods. ‘Yes. Thanks for saying that. I’m not proud of myself for the way I left Greg, though.’

Despite coming here only to tell her about Greg, to find out if Jackson has heard from him, this is the most information she’s had about Greg’s previous marriage and she’s desperate for more. ‘If you no longer love someone, then that’s not your fault. You did the right thing. How many people stay in loveless marriages and miss the chance for everyone to be happy?’

‘I suppose you’re right.’ Holly glances at her door then lowers her voice. ‘The truth is I met someone else as well. Oh, does that make me a bad person? Probably. But we’re still together now so, yes, I definitely did the right thing.’
