‘No. I’ve reported him missing to the police, though. They’ve searched the house too and said they’ll be talking to everyone he knows.’ She stares at Abby. ‘I’ve just been to see his friend, Marty, too, to let him know. I found out from Greg’s secretary that he had two weeks annual leave booked, not one. So that means he hasn’t walked out on his job, or at least we don’t know that yet. Marty didn’t even know Greg had any leave booked.’ Sienna shakes her head. ‘I could tell he was thinking what everyone else is – that Greg’s left me. But I know he hasn’t. We’ve always promised each other that we’d be honest if our feelings ever changed; this was so important to him, especially after Holly.’ Her eyes stay fixed on Abby. ‘It’s funny, but I was just saying to Rob that it feels like he’s been gone for weeks rather than two days. And the dinner party, well that feels like a lifetime ago.’

Why is she mentioning that? Guilt swarms around Abby. ‘Can I do anything?’ Her words feel traitorous.

Sienna shakes her head. ‘Thanks, but I don’t think there is anything. I’ve been out just driving around, hoping I’ll catch sight of him. That’s ridiculous, isn’t it? I mean, he’s not a missing child, is he? He’s a grown man who can go wherever he likes and do whatever he wants. Why would he be wandering the streets? It helps me just to look around, though.’

‘That’s understandable.’ Despite everything, Abby wants to comfort her.

‘The next thing I have to do is contact Greg’s ex-wife.’

‘Why? Surely he—’

‘Jackson needs to know, doesn’t he?’

Abby hasn’t thought of this. She’s never met Jackson and hasn’t stopped to think that Greg has a son this will impact. ‘Oh, yes,’ she agrees.

‘I’ve tried to call his mobile, but I must have an old number for him. And I don’t have Holly’s. I’ve never had to call her myself, and I can’t find it anywhere in the house. I have no choice but to tell her in person. I’ve put it off long enough.’

She knows she should offer to go with Sienna, but she doesn’t have it in her. She is already sinking in Greg’s life, moments away from drowning, so there’s no way she can survive throwing herself further in. ‘When will you go?’

‘Tomorrow morning. Unless, of course, he comes back before then.’ Sienna throws a glance at her now – her eyes boring into Abby’s – and that’s when she knows that her friend doesn’t trust her.
