Abby places her arm on Sienna’s. It’s hard not to pull away. ‘Maybe so, but I do know that what people present to the outside world isn’t always what’s happening behind closed doors.’
Sienna should question her about this, ask her if she’s talking about her own marriage, but she’s too consumed with worry over where Greg might be.
‘He’s never stopped loving his ex-wife,’ Sienna says. ‘I feel it in my bones. And I’ve spent all these years trying to be the best wife I can be, trying to help him get over her, but it’s futile, isn’t it? The heart wants what it wants, and nothing can change that.’
Abby frowns. ‘You think he still loves his ex-wife?’
Sienna loathes every second of this. Laying her soul bare like this doesn’t sit well with her; it’s usually she who listens to everyone else’s troubles while keeping her own locked away. She doesn’t want to be a victim of anything. But Abby needs to hear all this ‘I know he does.’
Abby passes her a tissue from the coffee table. ‘I’m sorry, Sienna. About all of this. I just… don’t know what to say. I don’t know Greg well enough to—’
‘I’m sorry to ask this but I need to. That night of the dinner party – did he say anything at all about our marriage or Holly? You spent all that time together, so I was wondering if anything came up. He was acting strangely after that, and alcohol does tend to loosen our tongues.’ She knows she’s coming across as accusatory; she needs to tread carefully in case Abby clams up.
Abby’s answer comes too quickly; she is too eager to assure Sienna that nothing had been wrong. ‘Not at all. He was… full of praise for you. Told me how proud he was of you for taking a leap and starting your own business.’
That’s when Sienna knows Abby is lying. Greg hasn’t wanted her to start her business; they’ve had enough discussions about it for her to know that he’s worried it will fail, that Sienna is wasting her time. Even finishing the downstairs of Abby and Rob’s house hadn’t changed his mind, and he’d still warned her not to get her hopes up.
‘Greg said that?’ she asks Abby. ‘Well, that’s good to hear.’ For now, Sienna doesn’t want to confront Abby. She will bide her time and find out exactly why she is lying.
Abby pulls out her phone. ‘Look, I hate to leave you, but I really need to get back. I promised Rob’s parents I’d do some shopping for them.’
‘That’s kind of you,’ Sienna says, not believing a word of it.
