‘Fond of me?’ She laughs, but it only lasts a moment. She tries to pull him inside, but her hand slips from his skin. ‘Please?’ she says. ‘Just come in for a sec.’
Against his better judgement he steps inside, feeling as he always does when he’s in this place. Like he doesn’t belong and has no right to be here. It was easy to shove that aside, though, because it was an escape from his life before. From Holly.
‘I called you hours ago,’ she says. Her skin looks paler and she’s breathless; it’s clear to him that something is wrong.
‘I had things to do. I shouldn’t be here at all, Leela. I know you’re hurt but you’ll find someone else. Someone younger, better for you. I’m in my thirties and I have a son. You deserve better than that.’
She tries to grab his arm but gives up. ‘I don’t want better than that. I want you.’
‘Right now, you do, yes, but in time—’
‘Don’t patronise me, Greg. I might be young but I’m not stupid.’
He knows this. He would never have been interested in her if there hadn’t been something about her, something far deeper than her beauty. It still isn’t enough, though. They were never meant to be together.
Her flat is a tiny studio flat, but he remembers how proud she was to show him it. It was the first time she’d lived away from home. What was he thinking? He’s too far past that stage in his life to have got involved with her.
‘Are you going to stay with your wife?’ Leela asks, walking across to the sofa. He tries not to picture the times they’ve lain together on there, their bodies entwined.
‘No. No, I’m not. My marriage hasn’t been right for ages, so I’m going to do what I should have done a long time ago.’ If there’s one thing he’s sure of it’s this: he doesn’t love Holly and he needs to set her free. It’s something he should have done years ago. He’s stayed for Jackson though; but he knows his son will be okay in time.
Leela stares at him. ‘You’re lying. You must be staying with your wife. Why would you be ending us otherwise?’
‘Because this isn’t right. That’s it.’ He glances at his watch. ‘I really need to go, Leela.’
‘Don’t leave me.’ Her voice is almost a whisper. It’s like she’s fading away. He needs to get out of here. Now. He turns to leave.
