‘When did you speak to Sienna?’ Abby needs to know this. Everything depends on Lillian’s answer.

‘It was months ago. She came to see me right after her husband went missing, and she said you knew where he was. I’ll be telling all this to the police and then they’ll know Rob had nothing to do with it.’

Now it all makes sense. Sienna went to Lillian right at the beginning to try and mess with Abby. At that time, she’d been convinced something had happened between her and Greg, and she would have done anything to find him.

‘Okay, Lillian, please do go to the police. The man leading the investigation is DC Roberts.’ Abby opens the front door. ‘Give him my regards. I’m sure he’ll remember me from the long discussion we’ve already had about Greg.’

Lillian shakes her head, moves towards the door and steps outside. ‘It’s a shame you didn’t get that job you went for,’ she says, a smug smile on her face.

It takes Abby a moment to realise what Lillian is referring to. So she was the one who sent that email to the school. And all this time she’d thought it had been Sienna’s doing. There have been so many things Abby has been wrong about. ‘Why would you do that?’ she demands.

‘Do what?’ Lillian is smirking.

‘You know what I’m talking about. You were the one who sent that email to the school withdrawing my application. Why, though? It doesn’t make sense.’

‘Clearly you’re not as smart as Rob’s given you credit for. It’s simple: if you didn’t have a job and were putting him under financial pressure, then it would be even more reason for Rob to realise he’s with the wrong person.’

Momentarily, Abby is speechless. ‘You’re more bitter and twisted than I thought.’ She’s about to shut the door on Lillian when she remembers there’s something else she needs to say. ‘One more thing. Before you contact Rob, you might want to know that it was Sienna who called the police about him. Not me.’

She slams the door shut.

Two hours later, the house is finally packed up. Abby sits in the car, turning on the engine and glancing back at the house. She doesn’t care about the furniture – it can all be given away – she’s got everything she needs to take with her. Some people might say she’s running away, but she knows it’s not that. She’s going home. Where she’s supposed to be. Where the memories of Mum are and the shadow of all of this can’t follow her. She will stay at Mel’s until this house is sold or she’s found a job and can get back on the property ladder.
