‘You’ve done this to get back at him, haven’t you? I always knew you were evil. Well, it will all come out, and I’m on my way there right now to tell the police what a nasty piece of work you are.’

‘Lillian, you’ve lost me. What am I supposed to have done?’

‘You just can’t let him be happy, can you? You’re so bitter that he’s left you and now you want to ruin his life. I—’

‘Hold on a minute. You think Rob left me? Is that what he told you?’

For a second Lillian looks less sure of herself, but she quickly recovers. ‘Yes, and Rob’s not a liar. He’s finally seen sense and left you, and now you’re trying to—’

‘Just stop talking. Please. Why don’t you try listening for once in your life?’ Only months ago, Abby would never have been able to remain calm in the face of Lillian’s aggression and anger. Now, though, this woman is nothing to her, and she doesn’t care what Lillian thinks of her. Slowly, she explains to her how mistaken she is, and that she wasn’t the one who went to the police.

‘You’re lying.’

‘No, I’m not. I left Rob. The funny thing is, in one way you’ve been right all along. Rob and I were never right for each other, but it was nothing to do with me not being good enough for him or living up to Tamara. Either way, it doesn’t matter – you should be happy that we’re no longer together. I certainly am.’

‘It must have been you. Only you would tell the police Rob had… done such an awful thing. You were the one who was after that man.’

Abby rolls her eyes. ‘Who? Greg? No, I wasn’t. Is that what Rob told you?’

‘No!’ Lillian is flustered now, and it’s the first time Abby has truly felt in control when dealing with her. Too little too late. ‘He only told me that he’d finally left you, and that it had been a long time coming.’

Saving face, Abby thinks. She can’t really blame him. He would have had to listen to years of hearing I told you so from Lillian if he’d admitted that Abby had left him for someone else. ‘Then what are you talking about, Lillian?’

The smug smile on her face tells Abby that there is something Lillian can hold over her. ‘His wife told me all about it. Lovely woman. Sienna. I think she was a friend of yours until you decided to try and go after her husband.’

‘What are you talking about? I was never after Greg.’

‘That’s not what his wife said. In fact, I think the police will be very interested to know all about it. Especially as you’ve tried to blame Rob.’
