‘I’m glad he’s dead,’ Rob says. ‘He got exactly what he deserved.’ She can’t be sure, because he’s speaking under his breath, but she’s positive the next words out of his mouth are that he hopes she gets what she deserves too.

‘Just hold on, Sienna – you need to slow down and tell me all this again.’

She repeats what Rob said to her, quoting every word precisely because they’re firmly etched in her mind now and it will take more than time to remove them. ‘I know it’s not an admission of anything, but surely it’s worth questioning him?’

‘And this is because he knew his wife was having an affair with your husband?’

She hasn’t corrected DC Roberts yet about Abby and Greg; that will only untangle the web they’ve woven. But she will do it soon. She just needs to know that they’ve thoroughly looked into Rob, and that they keep him away from the house while Jackson’s here. She’s tempted to call Holly and warn her that she should come and get Jackson, but she doesn’t want to let her down. She just needs to keep him safe for one more night and then one more day.

‘He admitted to me that he was jealous of Greg. I know that by itself it’s not proof of anything, but it’s important, isn’t it? Motive?’

‘We’ll talk to him,’ DC Roberts says. ‘So he’s not with you now?’

Sienna recalls Rob silently throwing things into his bags. ‘No, he’s gone. I don’t know where. Maybe back to his house?’

Once she’s off the phone, she grabs a bin liner and throws the rest of Rob’s things into it. Downstairs, Jackson is sitting at the kitchen table, his schoolbooks spread out around him.

‘Where’s Rob gone?’ he asks. ‘He didn’t even say goodbye.’

Sienna places Rob’s things by the door and joins Jackson at the table. ‘I’m sorry – he was in a bit of a rush.’

‘How come he had all his stuff with him? Is he leaving?’

This is difficult for Sienna; she wants to tell Jackson what she knows about Rob – lies have already destroyed too many people – yet she’s fully aware that he’s only a child. And she’s not his mother. It’s Holly she needs to talk to first, then she’ll be able to decide what’s best to share with Jackson.

‘He’s got a lot of stuff to sort out. He’s in the middle of a divorce, Jackson.’ This reminds Sienna that she has to tell Abby what’s happened. Warn her.

‘Is that why he acts weird sometimes?’

Sienna frowns. ‘What do you mean by weird? I thought you got on well with him.’

He shrugs. ‘I do. But he’s a bit… weird.’
