He doesn’t want her to, she can tell, but he nods. ‘Come with me, then. I’ll log you in. Don’t be long, though.’
He takes her to his office, where once again she’s surprised by the effort that’s gone into the layout and décor of the room. She hopes he doesn’t hover around; but asking him to leave will only raise his suspicions. She has no choice but to log into her email and start typing a fake one. If she takes long enough, he’s bound to get bored waiting and at least go back downstairs.
It’s pure luck that after a couple of minutes his phone rings. ‘I need to answer this,’ he says. ‘I’ll just be downstairs.’
‘Go ahead, I’m fine.’
The second the door shuts behind him, she exhales and begins. As she’s expected, he hasn’t bothered to log out, to keep his computer secure, and she now has access to everything she needs.
It’s ten minutes before he comes back in: more than enough time. ‘So, all done?’ he asks.
‘Yep.’
‘Let’s have that drink then. We can have them in the bedroom.’
She shoots up. ‘Actually, I think I need to get home. Let’s take a rain check. Actually, do you know what? I don’t even know what a rain check is. It’s something I hear all the time – maybe in films – but what does it actually mean? Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I’ve changed my mind.’
He stares at her, his mouth hanging open.
‘If Greg could see you now,’ she says, making her way out of the room. ‘Do you think he’d be proud to call you his friend?’
She doesn’t wait for an answer.
Even though Reuben hasn’t touched her, she showers the moment she gets home, needing to wash away everything about this evening. She feels better afterwards and focuses on the fact that she got Leela Hall’s address.
Rob is downstairs. He’s set up his PlayStation and is playing a game with Jackson, so they shouldn’t disturb her up here. Rob was quiet when she got home, didn’t even ask her where she’d been. She shouldn’t expect him to – they’re not a couple – but he normally does, so she can’t help but question this change.
Still wrapped in her towel, she pulls out her phone and calls Abby. Listening to the ringtone, it feels as though they have come full circle. She doesn’t know if she fully trusts her, but it feels as though they’re in this together. She hasn’t spoken of any of this to Rob; there’s no way she can tell him what Greg did, and she doesn’t think Abby has either. They are bonded by their silence.
‘I’ve found her address,’ she says the second Abby picks up.
‘Whose?’
