Perfect Greg. Hadn’t that always been how Sienna had seen him? At least before she was with him.
‘I don’t know what I can tell you,’ Rosa says. ‘Maybe you’ve got it all wrong?’
Sienna isn’t getting anywhere. Rosa doesn’t know anything, and it’s clear that she doesn’t believe Greg could have had an affair with a patient. That’s not even the worst of it, but without a name then it’s impossible for Sienna to find out exactly what Greg did.
‘Thanks for your time,’ she says, standing. ‘I’ll let you get on.’
‘The police were here again,’ Rosa says. ‘I suppose they have to speak to everyone Greg knew again. Have they found anything out yet?’
This is no surprise to Sienna; DC Roberts told her they would be back speaking to everyone he worked with. She wants to ask what they said, but there is no way Rosa would tell her. She plays by the rules, no matter what. Which is exactly why Greg would have left her in the dark.
‘Can I help you cook dinner?’ Jackson asks.
Sienna smiles at him and ruffles his hair. She’s still not sure whether he’d appreciate a hug from her, so she sticks to this small gesture. She has no idea what she can let him help with – is it safe to let him cut up peppers with a knife? Better if she doesn’t, just in case. This is all new to Sienna, but she’ll learn. It’s what Greg would have wanted.
‘How about you peel the potatoes?’ she offers. That’s got to be safe.
Jackson nods and takes the peeler from her. ‘Where’s Rob?’ he asks. ‘Is he eating with us?’
She glances at the clock on the kitchen wall. ‘Yes, he’s on his way home from work now.’
‘Are you two, like, together?’
‘No! Definitely not. I would never… it’s only been a few weeks since…’
‘He’s nice, though, isn’t he? I like him. He listens to me when I’m talking. Like Dad used to. Some kids at school say their dads never have time for them but… Dad always did. When I was here, I mean.’
Yes, Sienna thinks. She was the one who didn’t. ‘He was a good man,’ she says. She still wants to believe this, is desperately clinging on to the possibility that she and Abby have got this all wrong. And if they have, maybe it’s possible to be both a good man and a bad husband. Or any shade in between the black and white.
