Sienna sits, leans forward and lowers her voice; she doesn’t want anyone to overhear them, and Rosa’s door is open, just as it always is. ‘That’s what I used to think, but since he died, I’ve learned some things about him that I had no idea about, and I wondered if maybe you could help shed some light on them.’
‘Oh? Are you sure it’s me you want to talk to? I know I worked for Greg for a long time, but we didn’t socialise or anything – he wouldn’t have told me anything that was going on with him. In his personal life, I mean.’
‘That’s just it. This is kind of hospital related in a way. That’s why I’m hoping you can help.’ She needs to just say it aloud, get it out of the way. This hesitation is out of character for Sienna. ‘He was seeing one of his patients. Years ago, before I met him.’
Rosa stares at her, shakes her head. ‘Are you sure? I can’t imagine Greg would do that. It’s not appropriate, is it? Greg wasn’t like that.’
‘He did, Rosa, believe me. I’ve struggled to get my head around it too.’
‘But when? Surely not when he was with Holly? She’s a lovely woman; surely he wouldn’t have done that to her—’
‘It could have been before he was married – I’m not sure. But from what I know about Holly, I don’t think she would have cared either way. I don’t think her heart was in their marriage.’
Rosa is frowning. ‘He was so distraught when she left him, though. If he’d been cheating on her, why would he have cared that their marriage was over?’
She can’t tell Rosa what she believes: that if it was an affair while he was married to Holly, maybe he’d changed his mind, realised how much he’d loved her and put an end to it. Revealing this will lead to too many questions, though, and she only wants Rosa to help her identify any woman it could have been. Sienna ignores Rosa’s question. ‘I know it’s a long shot, but if you think back, can you think of any time Greg seemed to take an extra interest in any of his patients? Maybe a woman who had a lot of appointments, even though they might not have been necessary?’
Rosa shakes her head. ‘No, there’s nothing like that.’
‘Please, Rosa, I know I’m asking the impossible but please try and think back. You were there right from when he was made a consultant. You’re the only person who can help me.’
She’s still shaking her head. ‘Greg was great with all his patients, Sienna. You must know that. He’d give up his time for anyone and nothing was too much trouble.’
