‘Everything I told you that Greg admitted to me was the truth. All of it. I swear to you. You’ll make your own choices about whether or not to believe me, but I’m telling you now, he did it. He killed a woman he was involved with. A patient of his. It’s… horrific.’ She looks away. ‘But I did lie to you about what he was blackmailing me over. Somehow, he’d hacked into my emails and found one from my ex, Mark. No doubt you know all about him.’ She doesn’t wait for a reply. ‘Anyway, at the time it was well and truly over with Mark, but I did meet up with him soon after Mum died. And I cheated on Rob. I’m not proud of it; in fact, as long as I’m alive I’ll regret it, not just because I did that to Rob but because it allowed Greg to silence me about what he’d told me.’ She turns to Sienna now. ‘I told Greg he had to tell you and I gave him a week to do it. He said he would, but then begged to meet up so he could talk it through with me just before he spoke to you. That was the last time I saw him, and then he went missing. He confronted me with the email and said he’d tell Rob.’ There are tears in her eyes now. ‘At the time that would have been my life over. I was really trying to make things work with Rob, I wanted them to work, but if Rob had found out I’d done that to him then there would have been no saving us.’
Sienna believes this. As much as she can see that Rob loves Abby, she’s certain he’s the kind of man who doesn’t forgive easily. ‘I’m sorry Greg did that to you,’ she says.
‘So you believe me now? You believe I didn’t sleep with him?’
Maybe it’s only in this moment that Sienna finally does. She nods.
‘But… there’s more I need to tell you.’ Abby’s chest contracts as she takes a deep breath. ‘When we left the park, I followed Greg. I was so angry with him, and he was just walking off without a care in the world. He knew he’d got me.’
Sienna feels sick. She doesn’t want to hear any more.
‘He went home, and I followed him. I saw your car wasn’t there, so I pounded on the door. I don’t think I would have even cared if you had been. I wanted you to know, Sienna. You were my friend, and I wanted the truth to come out.’
But not enough to sacrifice yourself, Sienna thinks.
