‘Sorry, you don’t want to talk about this.’
She assures him it’s fine. ‘No, I need to. I don’t want to bottle it up. Can I be honest about something? Soon after it happened, I felt that the police were looking at me, wondering if I had anything to do with it. And it made me feel guilty, even though I know I’m not.’
‘Really? I had no idea they might think you could have—’
‘I don’t think they did, not really, but they have to cover all the bases, don’t they? That’s why they spoke to Abby too.’
Rob falls silent.
‘You didn’t know? I had to tell them I thought something had happened between them.’
‘She never said they’d spoken to her.’
‘It was when you were in Portugal. Anyway, nothing came of it. And I never told them about the night of the swap. They still don’t know about that.’
‘How come?’
‘Because I was afraid of how it would make me look. That’s terrible, isn’t it? And now it’s too late to tell them, because they’ll wonder why I didn’t mention it, and then they’ll assume I’m covering things up. Do you think that’s terrible? I’ve basically lied to the police.’ And not just about that, but she doesn’t tell Rob this.
‘It’s a bit of a mess,’ he says. ‘But I don’t think it matters. What happened to Greg has nothing to do with any of us, it can’t have. It’s just a terrible thing that happened. A random attack. He could have got into an argument with someone on the street.’
She nods.
‘I’d better get to work. See you later?’ He pauses. ‘Are you sure it’s okay for me to be here? I’ll be all right, you know. I’m not going to… do anything stupid. I’ll get over Abby – I have to. There’s nothing to fight for when she never loved me in the first place.’
Placing a hand on his arm is all Sienna can think of that might offer him any comfort. They’re all members of a club, she thinks. She, Rob and Jackson. Victims in some people’s eyes; the ones who have been left behind. But Sienna refuses to be labelled this way.
‘I’m going to pop home after work,’ Rob says. ‘To sort out getting the house on the market.’
It surprises Sienna to hear this. ‘Are you sure? It hasn’t been that long; don’t you want to give it time to see what might happen?’
‘Do you mean in case Abby suddenly realises she actually does love me after all, and not her ex who she’s been in love with since school?’
Before she has a chance to respond, Jackson appears, swinging his backpack onto his shoulder. ‘I’m ready,’ he says.
