Rob’s not listening, she can tell. He’s in his own bubble, drowning in his pain, and nothing she can say will help. ‘She was brutally honest with me,’ he replies. ‘She told me everything – that just after her mum died, she bumped into him, and they ended up spending the evening together. And the night.’ He looks away. ‘That must be what you heard her talking about on the phone.’

‘It can’t be. She must be lying because Greg’s dead now and she wants nothing to do with—’

‘It’s true, Sienna. And she met up with him again on Saturday. Here in London. They slept together again. She said she knew things were over between us, but she always planned to tell me straight away.’

Sienna struggles to digest this information. Has she been wrong after all? But she saw the draft email from Greg on his laptop, so there was definitely something going on. So many questions explode in her head. Why didn’t Abby tell her about this Mark? If he was so important to her, how come it never came up? The two of them talked about everything, so why the silence on such a huge part of her life? Then she realises that she has been no different herself. There is so much she hasn’t shared with Abby, even before the dinner party.

Does this mean Abby was telling the truth about what Greg had done? Abby was one of the last people to see him alive; if Greg was threatening her, if she exposed his past, it’s possible she retaliated. Sienna is convinced Rob doesn’t know any of this; if he did, he surely would have brought it up by now.

‘So you believe Greg has nothing to do with Abby leaving you?’ Sienna has to be sure; she’s spent too much time already being buried in lies. It has to stop now.

‘No. I believe Greg has a lot to do with it. Something changed that night of the swap. I know Mark had nothing to do with that, but it’s when Abby changed. I think she was really trying to make a go of our marriage. Of our new life together here. She was never the same after that night.’

Of course she wasn’t, because of what she’d learned about Greg, and what it did to her friendship with Sienna. That had to have taken its toll. ‘But you don’t believe they slept together?’
