‘Oh, Jesus. I didn’t know that,’ Marty says, wiping his brow. The heat in here is stifling.

‘It means that the chances of it being random are slim. This was someone who knew him and didn’t want his body to be discovered.’ DC Roberts has told her this, even though it’s all supposition. ‘There’s no DNA evidence on him, though. It was all wiped away in the water.’ The image of Greg floating lifeless in the water chokes her up. She fights back tears.

‘They’ll find out who did it, Sienna.’

She manages a nod. ‘Marty, I need to ask you something and I need you to promise me that you’ll be honest, no matter how hard it might be.’

He looks anxious as he puts down his cup. ‘I will,’ he says. ‘What is it?’

‘You’ve known Greg for a long time.’ She corrects herself. ‘Knew, I mean. Do you know if he was ever involved with one of his patients?’

Marty’s eyes widen. ‘No, of course not. He was too focused on his career to risk jeopardising it. Why do you ask?’

‘I’m… just starting to piece some things together and I need to try and make sense of them.’ Her answer is vague, but she can’t give Marty more detail than this.

‘What about having an affair while he was married?’

‘Greg cheat on you? No, of course not. Greg loved you, Sienna.’

‘That doesn’t always stop people doing it, does it? Anyway, I didn’t mean recently. What about before? When he was married to Holly? Do you know anything about an affair he might have had?’ She feels bad asking this when she hasn’t even spoken to Holly, but she needs to be sure.

There is no hesitation when Marty’s reply comes. ‘No, definitely not. He wouldn’t have had the time. Greg was always working, and in those days, he didn’t know how to balance his work and home life. That’s probably why Holly got fed up.’

‘So he never mentioned anything about another woman?’

‘Sienna, where is this coming from? I know you’re grieving and it’s such a lot to deal with, but what’s going on?’

‘I just want to understand him,’ she says. ‘Because I’m not sure I ever did. I thought I did, but… now I’m questioning everything.’ This is as close as she can get to telling the truth to Marty.

‘I can assure you that if Greg was seeing a patient or had an affair when he was married, then I’d know about it. Not sure I could say the same for Holly, though. As much as I like her.’

Sienna stares at him. ‘What do you mean?’
