She stares at one of him smiling and holding out his hands, trying to stop her taking the photo. Are you a murderer? Did you get what you deserved? She’s hoping something in his eyes will answer her back, but of course there is nothing but silence from a fleeting moment of time.

Her phone beeps with Holly’s reply.

We’d love to – but no cooking. I’ll treat us all to a takeaway x

In the shower, Sienna confronts something she’s tried to avoid dealing with. It’s too much of a coincidence that Greg went missing after spending that night with Abby. When it first happened, her instinct told her that Abby knew where Greg was. What if this is still true? That can only mean one thing: Abby knows what happened to Greg. Or worse. Abby is responsible.

Marty is the next person she contacts. He’s known Greg for a long time, since before he married Holly, so if anyone might know anything about him seeing one of his patients then it’s him. She assumes it won’t be easy to get much out of him – his loyalty to Greg won’t have been extinguished by Greg’s death.

They meet in a cafe in Waterloo. It had to be somewhere near the hospital; Marty has to be at work in a few hours. On the phone he’d sounded reluctant, even though he was trying his best to hide it. He’s only accommodating her out of duty to his friend.

‘How are you holding up?’ he asks.

He’s already asked this on the phone, and she gives the same response. ‘I can’t even describe how I feel. It’s one thing losing someone, but the way Greg died…’

Marty reaches for her hand. ‘I know. I still can’t wrap my head around it. Why would anyone do that to Greg? He was a kind, hardworking man, and I’ve never known anyone to harbour any ill feeling towards him.’ He hesitates. ‘I’m sorry, this is probably too hard for you to talk about.’

‘No, it’s exactly what I need. I don’t want people to tiptoe around me and be afraid to mention his name. It’s not like I can even try to move on when there’s a huge, awful question mark hanging over it all.’

‘Do the police have any suspects?’

She shakes her head. ‘He didn’t drown in that canal. He was already dead when someone… dumped him in there.’ She surprises herself with how she can be so detached when she’s talking about this. It’s born out of necessity, out of her desire to get to the truth. She wants to prove that Abby is a liar, even though it’s clear that Greg betrayed her. Being an adulterer is far different from being a murderer.
