‘Yes, yes, of course I did. I told him that, but I wanted him to talk to you first and then you could deal with it together.’

Sienna reaches for a kitchen chair and sinks into it. Her legs can’t seem to take her weight any more. ‘He never told me, though. Why? If you were putting pressure on him to tell the truth, then explain why he didn’t.’

Abby falls silent. Sienna’s convinced she won’t have an answer to this. There’s more to it, she knows it. Much more.

‘He blackmailed me,’ Abby says, just when Sienna’s about to accuse her of lying. ‘He told me that if I told you, he’d tell you I’d tried to sleep with him, and that I was jealous and rejected, trying to get back at him. And right after that he went missing.’

This is too much information to digest, no matter how hard Sienna tries to make sense of it. She needs to know if this is true, to find out with certainty, but she’s at a loss at how to do that. Probing Abby further in the hope of catching her out is the only option right now. ‘What day was it you met up?’

Abby’s answer comes with no hesitation. ‘The day he disappeared.’

Sienna stands. ‘Does Rob know any of this?’

‘No. It’s you I wanted to tell. It wasn’t for Rob to know, and I wish I didn’t know. After Greg died—’

‘Was murdered, you mean.’

‘I wondered whether to let it go because of the pain it would cause you, but I couldn’t let you go on thinking something had happened between me and him.’

‘So you’re really trying to tell me that Rob knows nothing about this?’ Sienna asks.

‘No. I told you, I haven’t said a word. And I won’t, not unless you want me to.’

She’s relieved to hear this; she actually trusts Rob and hates to think that he could have held something like this back from her. ‘No. Don’t say anything. I need to get my head around everything you’ve said.’

Abby nods. ‘Of course. I’m here if you need me for anything.’

Sienna looks at her, she can’t smile or thank her; she has nothing left to give. ‘There is something you can do for me.’

‘Of course. Anything.’

‘You can stay the hell out of my life.’
