A bomb has exploded in her life, and she has no idea how to deal with it. All of this information is too much. She needs to pick it apart and reassemble it to make sense of it. There has to be another reason why Abby is saying all of this.
‘Why now? If it’s true, then why didn’t you tell me any of this before? We were supposed to be friends, but clearly your loyalties lay with Greg, a man you hardly even knew.’ She wipes tears away. ‘You slept with him, didn’t you? Even after he said all this! Was it your way of comforting him?’
‘No! I swear to you nothing like that happened. Yes, it was a kind of intimacy that he was telling me all this, but it wasn’t physical in any way. I wouldn’t do that to you.’
Rob, though. Why hasn’t she mentioned that she wouldn’t do that to Rob? Sienna stares at her, tries to assimilate all of this information. ‘What did you say to Greg when he said all this?’
‘I told him to tell you, and that you could work it out together. He just kept crying, saying his work could never find out, and that he’d lose everything. He was terrified of losing Jackson. He made me promise not to say anything.’ She pauses. ‘I made him that promise because I could see how much pain he was in.’
Sienna feels sick again.
‘He said that he’d tell you, Sienna. And I believed him. I made up the spare bed for him, and he went to sleep. If I hadn’t drunk so much, I wouldn’t have managed to get to sleep myself. I don’t know how, but I did. And then when I woke up in the morning he’d already left. Without a word.’
This is too much. She doesn’t want to hear any more, but she needs to know all of it. She’s confused – torn between not wanting to believe Abby, and the minute possibility that maybe Abby is telling the truth.
‘And did you speak to him again?’ Sienna asks.
‘Yes. The next day I went to the hospital to confront him about what he’d told me, and he acted as though nothing had happened. I told him he had to tell you; otherwise I would. Then he texted to ask if I’d give him a week to talk to you. I allowed him that time and, on the last day, he asked if he could meet me before he spoke to you. I really thought he just wanted my advice about how to tell you, or just to go through everything in his mind. I never thought for one second he’d—’
‘And you didn’t stop to think that the police would need to know about this?’
