‘Look at this view,’ Rob says, transfixed by the sea, just as she is. ‘My parents brought me here as a kid. I don’t really remember it, though.’ He turns to her. ‘So what’s your plan?’
Sienna doesn’t want to admit that she doesn’t have one, that all she needed to do was feel closer to Greg. And closer to the truth. ‘The coffee shop he used his card in is right near the cinema.’ She’s already looked this up on one of her restless nights.
Rob looks as though he’s about to say something to put her off, so she’s surprised when he tells her it’s a good place to start.
Inside the coffee shop, Sienna feels nothing. She’s expected to somehow sense that Greg has been here, as implausible as that seems. Yet it’s just an ordinary place, bustling with people, even on a weekday afternoon. It’s no wonder the police got nowhere with the staff. The queue is nearly to the door, so how can anyone be expected to remember Greg buying a coffee once? It was a normal coffee, the police had found out. No cappuccino or latte, nothing like that. Just plain: how Greg always has it.
‘I guess it was stupid coming here,’ she says. ‘I don’t know what I expected to get from it.’
Rob takes her arm. ‘Do you want to go?’
‘I never did make you that coffee at my house. Shall we grab one and go and sit on the beach? Unless you need to get home?’
‘No, I don’t. Not yet. Abby thinks I’m at work, so I can’t go back yet anyway. I don’t relish the idea of explaining that I called in sick.’
Sitting on the beach, Sienna stares at the waves, wonders fleetingly what it would feel like to be pulled away by them, to close her eyes and surrender to it. She would never do it, of course, she has too much passion for life. Usually. Did Greg have thoughts like this? She can’t imagine he would ever feel that low. He loved his work too much; it’s what he lived for. And Jackson.
‘So do you think you’ll talk to Abby?’ Sienna asks Rob.
‘Yes.’ His answer is forceful, yet she wonders if he has the determination to see it through, or even the will.
‘Will you let me know what she says about Greg?’
He nods, makes her this promise.
For a while longer they sit on the beach together, neither of them mentioning Greg or Abby again. It’s refreshing to talk about other things, about the people they are individually rather than as part of their respective couples, and Sienna doesn’t want it to end.
‘We’d better get back,’ she says to Rob eventually. ‘Traffic won’t be great at this time.’
