She’s counting the days now; they have taken on a new meaning. She will no longer let herself believe that something awful has happened to him, and now, rather than being terrified of each new twenty-four-hour period, she welcomes it, because it’s edging her nearer to the truth. She hasn’t been able to think about it too much before – it seemed so long away, and she was convinced Greg would be home before Monday came – but now it’s all she can focus on.

It’s Thursday now – four more days until Greg is due back at work. On Monday morning, by nine a.m., she will know whether he left on purpose. If he turns up, then she will confront him; if he doesn’t, then it means only one thing.

She can’t dwell on what that is, so she forces it out of her mind; instead, convincing herself that she will be seeing Greg soon enough.

Spurred on by what Monday will bring, Sienna feels lighter today, as though she can deal with anything that’s thrown her way. Spending the other evening with Holly and Jackson has helped; she isn’t alone in this – there are others who want Greg home as much as she does.

Her phone’s ringing. She reaches over to the bedside table and stares at the screen. No caller ID. Not Greg, then. Nor is it Abby.

‘Mrs Wells? It’s DC Roberts.’

She pulls herself up, struggles to take a breath. ‘Have you found him?’

‘No, sorry. But I do have some news. Hopefully, it will set your mind at rest.’ He’s not speaking fast enough; she needs to know now. ‘There’s been some activity on his debit card.’

‘Where?’

‘In Brighton. At a coffee shop.’

Brighton. What is Greg doing there? He’s never mentioned the place before, and as far as she’s aware hasn’t even been there.

‘Mrs Wells? Did you hear me?’

‘Yes, sorry. I’m listening.’

‘This gives us something to go on. Does he know anyone in Brighton?’

‘Not that I’m aware.’ She’s still in shock, her mind scrabbling to make sense of what she’s hearing. ‘Is there CCTV? Did you actually see him on camera?’

‘We’re still going through all the CCTV in that area. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any in the coffee shop. We’ll keep you informed but I just wanted to let you know.’

‘Thank you.’

‘He’s due in at work on Monday, isn’t he?’

‘Yes.’ And she fully intends to be there.

After she ends the call, Sienna sits with the information she’s just learned. It offers her little comfort; until she’s facing Greg, getting some answers directly from his mouth, nothing will ease her mind.

Once she’s showered and dressed, she calls Holly to let her know what she’s found out.
