Regular exercise is a great way to cope with sad or stressy feelings… it’s a win-win activity. Find something you like to do – swimming, cycling, running, tennis, netball, footy, aerobics, step, kick-boxing, gymnastics… it doesn’t matter. Go for it!

Believe It or Not…

Dear Cathy

My friends know I am from a very religious family, but they don’t really get it. I wish they could see how much I get from going to church and having something to believe in that is ‘bigger than me’, if that makes sense. It makes me feel safe and looked after.

Elizabeth, age 11

Dear Cathy

I got a meditation CD for my birthday and I do a bit every day, and I think I am much calmer because of it! My mum wants me to go to yoga classes with her, so I might give that a try too.

Courtney, age 13

Religion can be a real help when the going gets tough. The same applies whichever religion it is – it’s the fact that you believe it, that you worship/pray regularly and are part of a big community of fellow believers that seems to make the difference. If you have questions, doubts, worries, problems, religion can help you to find answers and to feel less alone. Although Elizabeth’s friends don’t understand, they might just envy the confidence it gives her. Never knock someone because of their beliefs/religion… it may not be right for you, but if it works for them, that’s what matters.

Meditation is another great tool for coping with everyday stress. It sounds a little crazy, but research has shown that people who meditate really are calmer and healthier because of it, so Courtney is definitely on the right track! Adding yoga to the mix would probably help even more… this one’s a winner.

Back to Nature

Dear Cathy

When I get all wound up I take the dogs out (we have two bearded collies) and walk across the fields near our village for a while. I love being in the countryside and it never fails to help me get things in perspective.

Rhiannon, age 12

Dear Cathy

If I have a bad day, I plan lots of treats like a bubble bath and a manicure and an early night curled up with one of your books. That always puts a smile back on my face!

Miya, age 13

Nature can be a great healer. Like Rhiannon, I love trudging with my dog through woods or beside rivers, lakes and streams… or better still, along a deserted beach! Nature is beautiful and my problems always seem smaller and more manageable after a long walk. Try it and see! The dogs will be your friends for life too…

Miya has found that a pamper day works well to boost her mood when she’s feeling low… having little treats to look forward to when life isn’t going according to plan really can make all the difference. Be kind to yourself… you deserve it!
