But as soon as she’s asked it, Abby knows what her answer will be: it is written all over the woman’s face. ‘I’m sorry but they’ve already contacted another candidate to fill your slot and we’re limited as to how many we can shortlist. But the Head said she will keep your application on file, in case we don’t end up recruiting from this round.’

Again, under any other circumstances, Abby would stay right there and argue her case, try to reason with them, but she doesn’t know how much longer she’ll be able to hold down the nausea churning in her stomach. Turning away, she thanks the woman and leaves as quickly as she can, swiping away tears before anyone has a chance to notice them.

That evening she sits alone in the house, still unable to shake off what happened at the school. It’s not even the disappointment of losing out on that job that crushes her – there are bound to be others – it’s that she knows this is only the beginning of something.

It has to be Sienna. But no matter how much she goes over it, Abby can’t work out how she would have known about the interview. She’d only heard about it last week and she and Sienna have barely exchanged a word. She can’t have hacked into Abby’s emails as Greg managed to; otherwise she would have sent the email directly, rather than from a fake account.

Rob is the only person who knew about it. Lillian and Eric were aware that she had an interview, but they’d never asked which school it was with. Besides, Lillian made it clear that she wasn’t happy about Rob earning all the money at the moment, so she wouldn’t have done this.

All of this thunders through her head. Sienna is punishing her, and Abby doubts she will stop here. She needs to find out exactly what Sienna wants from her; this has gone far enough. She picks up her mobile, ready to confront what she must.

There’s no answer, but she keeps the phone pressed to her ear, her heart beating faster as she anticipates the possibility of hearing Sienna’s voice.

The second she ends the call, Rob’s name flashes on the screen.

‘Hey,’ he says, when she answers. ‘Are you okay? You sound a bit strange.’

She’s tried to keep her greeting normal, but perhaps she no longer knows what that is. ‘Yeah, all fine here,’ she says.

‘We just arrived at the villa. How did the interview go?’
